Slovak Online 2021

Expansion of a free Slovak language learning portal for migrants and other adult learners, with a clear focus on everyday language needs. The project ran from 1 November 2021 to 31 October 2024 and was supported by Erasmus+.

Slovak Online 2021

Website: https://slovake.eu

Slovake.eu has existed for years as a multilingual way to learn Slovak online, but many of its original lessons were created at a time when migration to Slovakia was much lower and several topics leaned toward tourism. This project responded to these changes. The focus shifted to everyday situations and vocabulary that matter when you are new to the country, from dealing with public offices to arranging essential services, while keeping the learning experience free, practical, and easy to use on modern devices.

The project’s main audience was adult learners studying independently, especially migrants and people preparing to live in Slovakia, including those moving for work, family reasons, or study. The project addressed both content and usability. New migration-oriented modules were added, the built-in dictionary and translation support were improved, and the platform was updated to work reliably across modern devices.

Results and outputs

The central outcome is the redesigned and updated slovake.eu portal. Across the courses, around 350 to 400 pages of text were reviewed and refined, 2,501 exercises were created or redesigned, and 11,445 audio files were produced or reprocessed. The visual layer was also renewed, with nearly 1,600 new images and icons added.

The portal is available in 16 languages, with Ukrainian introduced during the project. Nearly 42,000 users from Ukraine are registered on slovake.eu, reflecting the platform’s growing relevance for people preparing to live in Slovakia.

Our role

Studio GAUS GmbH developed the project concept and contributed to the preparation of the funding application. We carried out the complete redesign and redevelopment of the slovake.eu platform, including the visual design, platform structure, and underlying system, and were responsible for rebuilding the existing learning environment as a coherent, modern, and freely accessible resource for adult learners.

As part of this work, we revised and updated all existing courses, reworked and rebuilt legacy content, and implemented new migration-focused learning modules. We also worked on content development and integration, defined structural and editorial guidelines, and integrated all materials into a consistent multilingual environment. In addition, we contributed to project coordination, implementation, and testing to ensure that the platform remains stable, usable, and sustainable beyond the project period.

Project partners

  • Edukácia@Internet (Slovakia)
  • Studio GAUS GmbH (Germany)
  • Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave (Slovakia)
  • Jazykovedný ústav Ľudovíta Štúra SAV (Slovakia)
  • INALCO (France)
  • Vilnius University (Lithuania)

The partnership combined in-person transnational meetings with regular online working sessions. Over the course of the collaboration, the partners also gained a practical insight into everyday coordination tools. After testing Slack, the consortium returned to email, which proved to fit better with existing workflows.

Visibility and impact

By the end of the project period, the platform recorded over 151,000 registered users. Feedback collected during user testing indicated regular use of the platform and continued uptake among learners.

For people learning Slovak for work, study, family reasons, or everyday life, slovake.eu is aligned with situations that matter in practice. The platform remains available as a free, multilingual learning option that is kept up to date and usable across different learning contexts.
