One Place to Learn Slovak

We developed slovake.eu as a free, multilingual online platform for people who want to learn Slovak in a practical and reliable way. We structured the learning environment around language courses, interactive exercises, grammar support, audio materials, a built-in dictionary, and cultural and country information about Slovakia. All content is available online, free of charge, and designed for use across devices.

We designed slovake.eu for a broad and very real audience, including people preparing to live and work in Slovakia, international students, partners in mixed families, Slovaks living abroad, tourists, and language enthusiasts. What they share is a need for accessible Slovak learning that supports everyday communication, not only formal study.

We did not design slovake.eu as a single course or a short-term solution. Over time, we developed it into a long-term learning environment that supports learners from their first Slovak words to independent language use.

From Idea to Platform

The concept grew out of our experience with the multilingual learning platform lernu.net. The aim was to build on that foundation and extend it to other languages.

From the beginning, we shaped the overall concept of slovake.eu and took responsibility for its platform structure and long-term development perspective. Working together with partners led by the Slovak NGO Edukácia@Internet (E@I), the project took its first concrete shape through European cooperation.

The first version of slovake.eu went online in 2011. It offered beginner courses aligned with A1 and A2 levels, audio support, grammar explanations, a dictionary, and a multilingual interface. From the start, the platform showed that Slovak could be taught online in a structured and engaging way, and that there was clear demand for it.

Growing with Learners

Over the years, we expanded slovake.eu step by step through continued collaboration and European projects, while maintaining one coherent platform. We added intermediate courses at B1 and B2 level, allowing learners to follow a complete learning path from beginner to independent user in one place.

At the same time, we expanded the supporting tools around the courses. We refined interactive exercises, linked vocabulary learning directly to texts and audio, and grew the media library with videos, recordings, and authentic materials. Together, these elements help learners experience Slovak in real contexts and at their own pace.

A major recent phase focused on updating the platform for today’s reality. As migration to Slovakia increased, the content shifted more strongly toward everyday situations such as dealing with offices, services, work, and daily life. We restructured the platform to improve performance, mobile use, and accessibility, and refreshed the visual design with a consistent set of illustrations and icons.

Today, slovake.eu is available in sixteen interface languages, including Ukrainian, reflecting the needs of new learner groups. This multilingual access lowers entry barriers and allows users to study Slovak while navigating the platform in their own language.

Part of a Larger Ecosystem

slovake.eu stands on its own, but it is developed within a broader context. Over the years, we have built and maintained many educational websites, including a family of language-learning platforms focused on different languages and learner groups.

These projects have grown independently, shaped by their audiences and the languages they support, while sharing common values such as free access, practical learning, multilingual reach, and long-term sustainability.

We are working on stronger connections between related projects at the organisational and conceptual level. This includes sharing experience across projects, aligning design and learning approaches where it makes sense, and using synergies to improve quality, accessibility, and long-term maintenance over time.

The aim is not to merge platforms or blur their identities, but to build on what already exists. By learning from one another and coordinating future development, each platform, including slovake.eu, can continue to grow while benefiting from a shared direction and accumulated expertise.

Impact and Recognition

The impact of our work is visible in the reach and steady day-to-day use of slovake.eu. Over the years, the platform has reached learners from more than two hundred countries and built a large international user base. The platform continues to be used regularly in self-study and in educational contexts.

The project has been referenced at European level as an example of good practice in digital language learning and presented at international language education events. Universities and adult education providers recommend slovake.eu as a self-learning tool, and teachers use it to complement classroom teaching.

User feedback highlights the same strengths again and again: free access, a clear structure, practical language, and the possibility to learn independently while still feeling supported.

An Invitation to Collaborate

slovake.eu exists because of long-term cooperation. Linguists, educators, developers, designers, translators, and institutions from many countries have contributed their expertise.

We want to continue in this spirit. We welcome collaboration with universities, schools, adult education providers, NGOs, and organisations working on language learning, integration, and digital education. This can include using the platform in teaching, contributing translations, testing new ideas, or developing future content together.

slovake.eu is not a finished product. It is a living project that grows with its learners and partners. If you are interested in working with us or becoming part of this ecosystem, we would be glad to start a conversation.
