Learning a new language in kindergarten or early primary school rarely begins with grammar. It starts with everyday words, a familiar story and the confidence to join in.

Polish for Kids is an ongoing Erasmus+ project focused on the development of practical, child-friendly digital tools for early Polish learning, alongside ready-to-use materials for teachers. The idea is simple but ambitious: to create an educational app for children, supported by teaching activities that connect what happens on a screen with what happens in the classroom and at home.

The project responds to a gap identified by the partner organisations. While there is a wide range of digital content for early English learning, comparable high quality apps and platforms for very young learners of Polish are difficult to find. Polish for Kids aims to address this by creating open educational resources that can be used beyond the partnership and made available through the polski.info portal in a dedicated “Polish for Kids” section.

As the project is still in progress, measurable learning outcomes are not yet available. The current work focuses on the development of the children’s app and accompanying teaching materials, as well as on preparing these resources for use in early language learning contexts.

Results and outputs

At the centre of the project is the Polish for Kids app, developed as an interactive learning space built around short animations and picture-based activities. The content is designed for preschool and early primary learners and deliberately avoids text-heavy tasks and explicit grammar explanations.

The app builds on the existing Dandelin Academy framework and characters. In the Polish for Kids version, the main cast includes Dandelin, two child characters adapted for the Polish context, and supporting figures such as a teacher, a parrot and a dog.

Interaction focuses on visual and hands-on formats rather than instruction-driven tasks. These include drag-and-drop activities, search tasks within images and object selection exercises. Audiovisual elements such as videos and songs form part of the learning environment and are prepared for use across digital and classroom contexts.

Alongside the app, the project develops teaching activities for kindergartens and early primary education. These include lesson plans and ready-to-use materials such as worksheets, craft templates and colouring pages, supporting the connection between digital app content and structured offline learning moments.

Our role

Studio GAUS GmbH is responsible for the project concept and overall structure and coordinates the development of the Polish for Kids app and its integration into the polski.info platform. We initiated the project idea and shaped the conceptual and didactic framework of the learning offer.

Our work includes the development of the children’s app, the creation of illustrations, and the coordination of content development across the partnership. We also integrate the app and learning materials into a dedicated “Polish for Kids” section on polski.info and accompany testing and refinement processes throughout the project.
