Learning German from the first words differs from typical A1-level courses. Experience from the deutsch.info platform indicated that the existing A1 online course was not well suited to absolute beginners, particularly for self-directed learners without prior language learning experience.
deutsch.info Intro addressed the need for an entry point below A1 level by introducing a preparatory course for absolute beginners. Instead of long explanations or memorised dialogues, the course is structured around a limited, high-frequency vocabulary and supports early practice with short phrases and simple sentences.
The deutsch.info platform was expanded with this introductory course for autonomous online learning. It is available free of charge and can be used in 22 interface languages, allowing learners to navigate the platform and access explanations in their preferred language. The course is intended for adults with little or no prior knowledge of German, including those preparing to move to, or already living in, German-speaking countries who cannot easily attend formal courses.

Results and outputs
As part of the project, a new introductory German course for absolute beginners was developed and published on deutsch.info. The course consists of 150 short lessons and is available in 22 languages, with translations and explanations provided in the learner’s chosen language.
The course combines interactive exercises with visual and audio materials. Vocabulary items are linked to an integrated dictionary with translations and pronunciation. Short grammar explanations and spaced-repetition elements support retention and revision.

Our role
Studio GAUS GmbH developed the project idea for deutsch.info Intro, coordinated the preparation of the project application, and was responsible for the overall conception and coordination of the project from the outset.
We developed and implemented the introductory course on the deutsch.info platform, including its overall structure, learning logic, and progression of lessons. We developed the pedagogical concept and the core exercises, compiled the high-frequency vocabulary base, created illustrations, and audio materials, and worked on phrases and dialogues in collaboration with other partners.
Over the course of the project, we coordinated the entire working process and worked closely with the project partners on content development and implementation, ensuring that pedagogical concepts and platform structures evolved in parallel.
Project partners

The partnership combined hands on collaboration with steady online coordination. Alongside monthly virtual meetings, the team met in person four times, in Berlin, Maribor, Vienna and Prado del Rey. These meetings were used to align methodology, review prototypes and prepare dissemination ahead of the project’s conclusion.
Visibility and impact
Dissemination combined online and offline outreach. Across partner and project channels, more than 280 social media posts were published, reaching over 950,000 people. Platform usage increased during the final project phase. Between October 2024 and February 2025, deutsch.info recorded an average of around 75,000 unique visitors per month, with a peak of about 100,000 in October 2024, representing an increase compared to the previous period.
In the later phase of the project, six multiplier events were held in Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey. In parallel, the new course was tested online with 134 users. Feedback from these activities informed final adjustments to the course and its presentation.
The Intro course serves as an entry point for learning German from the first words onward. On deutsch.info, learners can select their interface language and work through the short lessons independently.
