Learning German involves mastering noun articles and their declension across grammatical cases. For many learners, choosing between der, die and das and applying the correct forms consistently presents a recurring challenge.
DerDieDas mit viel Spaß addressed the practice of German noun articles and declensions through a learning application with a game-based approach. The focus was on repeated practice of grammatical gender and case patterns, which are commonly perceived as challenging in German language learning.
The materials were developed for learners at beginner to lower-intermediate levels (A1 to B1), including adults learning German for work, study or everyday life. The application combines game-based exercises, adaptive elements and multimedia components such as audio and images and follows an open educational resource approach with low barriers to access.
At the centre of the project was the smartphone and tablet app deutsch.info: Der Die Das. The learning content is based on the 1,000 most frequent German nouns, expanded into around 10,000 example sentences and practice items. The app adapts to individual performance, repeating what is not yet secure and supporting personalised learning paths through spaced repetition.
Results and outputs
As part of the project, a free learning application for practising German articles and declensions was developed. The app offers interactive exercises with immediate feedback and uses adaptive elements, including spaced repetition and multimedia support.
The content was designed to be accessible to learners through more than 20 interface languages. The app was planned for release via the project website and through the Google Play and Apple App Store from November 2021.
Our role
Studio GAUS GmbH developed the project concept and coordinated the preparation of the application for DerDieDas mit viel Spaß and was responsible for shaping the project from the outset.
We developed and implemented the learning application for iOS and Android, including its overall architecture, visual design, learning logic and multimedia integration. We also contributed to the pedagogical approach of the application, aligning content structure and adaptive learning elements such as spaced repetition with the project’s didactic concept.
Throughout the project, we coordinated the overall working process and accompanied content development and implementation in close cooperation with the project partners, ensuring that pedagogical concepts and application structures evolved in parallel.

The team planned transnational meetings in Vienna, Berlin, Maribor and Istanbul, spaced across the project timeline. Alongside these in person meetings, day to day coordination remained flexible through regular online collaboration.
Project communication involved continuous exchange between partners throughout development. This included coordination of content, learning logic and technical implementation across the project period.
