OLGEA set out to improve young learners’ German language skills while also strengthening environmental awareness and well being, using a holistic approach that takes learning beyond the classroom.
Rather than treating outdoor learning as an occasional break from routine, the project framed it as a structured teaching method. Language practice takes place through meaningful, task based activities linked to nature and sustainability topics. OLGEA also responded to a practical gap identified by teachers. Resources for outdoor language learning in German were scarce, leaving many educators without ready to use ideas they could apply in real school settings.
To make the approach easy to adopt, the partnership developed guidance for teachers and a collection of practical materials. The results were embedded into the existing online teacher environment on deutsch.info, ensuring that the content remains accessible and usable beyond the project period.

Results and outputs
The main public result is a dedicated OLGEA section on the deutsch.info Teachers’ Portal, launched in early 2025. It brings together an interactive guide for teachers, a searchable collection of teaching materials, and practical tools such as checklists for planning outdoor lessons.
The lesson plans and worksheets cover German levels A1 to B1 and are designed for children roughly aged eight to fourteen. All portal content is openly available, allowing teachers to adapt the materials.
Development was firmly grounded in practice. The materials were piloted in partner schools in Slovenia, Croatia and Lithuania, involving at least 50 students, and were then shared more widely through national teacher training events in early 2025.

Our role
Studio GAUS GmbH was responsible for the development and integration of the digital project outputs within the existing deutsch.info Teachers’ Portal. We designed and implemented the dedicated OLGEA section, prepared and integrated downloadable materials based on the project content, and accompanied quality assurance and refinement during and after the testing phase. In addition to these tasks, we supported coordination activities related to online publication and dissemination, contributing to the long-term accessibility, reuse, and stable integration of the results within the platform.
Project partners
- Inter-kulturo d.o.o. (Slovenia)
- Univerza v Mariboru (Slovenia)
- Osnovna škola Retkovec (Croatia)
- Osnovna šola Janka Glazerja Ruše (Slovenia)
- Klaipėdos Hermano Zudermano gimnazija (Lithuania)
- Studio GAUS GmbH (Germany)
A key early milestone was the partners’ methodology training in Slovenia, held from 28 November 2022 to 30 November 2022. This training aligned the consortium around the outdoor learning approach and laid the foundation for the materials developed later. From there, the work progressed through content development, piloting in schools and final teacher training activities, with the online portal serving as the shared home for all results.
Visibility and impact
Because the OLGEA outputs are integrated into the deutsch.info Teachers’ Portal, the resources remain available in a stable and familiar environment for teachers, rather than relying on a standalone project website. The open licence also supports reuse and local adaptation, which is particularly important for outdoor learning, where activities need to fit different school settings and local contexts.
For teachers of German who work with outdoor learning approaches, OLGEA brings together a practical guide, tested lesson ideas, and concrete tools within a single online environment. This supports the use of outdoor language learning activities in everyday school practice.
