In many families, screens become part of everyday life long before children start school. The project refers to studies showing how early and how intensively this happens, from daily smartphone use among kindergarten age children to the growing number of very young children who already have their own devices. It also highlights how quickly media use can turn into a source of conflict and guilt within families.
EduSkills+ Media2 is being developed as a practical response to this situation. The project is built around the idea of a learning partnership between kindergarten teachers and parents, supported by clear, tested materials that help adults guide children towards healthy media habits. The focus is not only on limiting screen time, but on fostering responsible, reflective and constructive ways of engaging with media.
The project is designed for kindergarten teachers, children and parents, as well as ECEC students and other education professionals. The portal is being developed around two main components: a Media Toolbox with background information, good practice examples for working with caregivers and downloadable materials, and a set of ready-to-use activities for media education in kindergarten settings. A key element of the concept is that media education does not always require digital devices, allowing activities to work in environments where screen use is kept to a minimum.
The work is still in progress. An expanded portal integrated into the eduskills.plus environment is being developed, and the media website is being redesigned to accommodate the new content. Materials are being prepared in Croatian, English, German and Slovene, supported by a dedicated translation platform that avoids automatic translation and allows updates to be managed efficiently. The portal is being implemented for use on computers, tablets and smartphones and is being developed with accessibility requirements in mind. All materials are prepared as open educational resources, and the portal remains free to access beyond the project period.
Our role
Studio GAUS GmbH is responsible for the development and ongoing expansion of the EduSkills+ Media portal within the EduSkills+ environment. We design, implement and maintain the digital structures through which the materials are organised and published, with a focus on accessibility and multilingual delivery.
Our work includes expanding the Media Toolbox, integrating downloadable materials and refining the platform based on feedback from testing and review processes. We support dissemination in the online space and work closely with the partner organisations so that content development, piloting and digital implementation remain aligned throughout the project duration.
